Choosing a Night Light: Light, Battery and Where to Use It
A night light is a small lamp that gives a low, soft light so the room is never completely dark while you sleep or when you get up at night. It lets you find your way without switching on the ceiling light and does not dazzle.
Rechargeable or plug-in?
A rechargeable night light works without a cable; it can stand on a bedside table, a shelf or the floor and be carried by hand when needed. It is charged via USB, and how many hours it lights on one charge depends on the battery capacity and the brightness level. If it will stay on for long hours every night, choose a model with a long run time.
Light colour and brightness
Warm, low light is preferred at night; bright white light disturbs the sleeping environment. On colour-changing models a warm tone can be chosen and fixed for the night. Adjustable brightness lets the same lamp serve both as a sleep light and as a light before reading.
Timer
Models with a switch-off timer go out by themselves after a set time; this saves the battery when the light only needs to stay on until you fall asleep.
Magnetic models
A magnetic night light attaches to a metal surface or to the included mount; it creates a fixed light point inside wardrobes, in hallways and on stairs and is easily removed for charging.
Where should it go?
In the bedroom, a night light is placed below the eye level of the bed, at a point where the light does not shine straight into the face. In a children's room, the light should be enough for the child to recognise the room on waking, but not so bright that it interrupts sleep. In hallways and on the way to the bathroom, several night lights placed one after another create an unbroken trail of light along the route walked at night. Figure models also stand as decorative objects on a shelf or bedside table; because they are part of the room during the day as well, the design can be chosen to suit the style of the room.
Use and care
Charge with the supplied cable and a suitable USB adapter. Silicone-bodied models are cleaned with a damp cloth; never immerse the product in water. If it will not be used for a long time, charge it before the battery runs completely flat and store it.
