Wall Art: Large-Scale Wall Applications

Unlike a standard picture, the products in this section are designed to turn an entire wall into a composition. As the scale grows the selection criteria change too: the length of the wall, its lighting and the viewing distance in the room become decisive. Our collection holds 3 products and every one of them has a published price.

Scale and Viewing Distance

A large-scale wall application is perceived as a whole only if there is enough viewing distance. In a narrow corridor a very large composition is seen piece by piece and loses its effect. A practical rule: if you can step back as far as the width of the work, the composition reads as a whole.

Wall Colour and Contrast

The contrast between the composition and the wall determines the perceived depth. On a light wall a dark work stands out as graphic and sharp; on a dark wall a light-toned work comes forward. When the contrast is low, the work sinks into the wall however large the scale.

Lighting

In large-scale wall applications the lighting is part of the work. Light arriving from the side brings out texture and shadow, while flat light from the front flattens the surface. For an even wash use a Wall Washer, and for focused accent a Decorative LED Spotlight.

Mounting

As the scale grows, the number of fixing points and their load capacity matter more. On a plasterboard wall a heavy application must be fixed not to the board itself but to the supporting profile behind it; the line of the profile can be found with a magnetic detector. In brick and concrete, plugs of a suitable diameter are used.

Budget

All 3 products are priced: from 340 EUR to 862 EUR, with a median of 541 EUR. Because these are large-scale, bespoke applications, the price range is markedly higher than for standard pictures.

The Relationship With the Rest of the Room

A large-scale wall application becomes the focal point of the room, so everything around it has to relate to it. A second strong element on the same wall — a large picture, a coloured cabinet, a patterned curtain — creates two focal points and both are weakened. In arranging the furniture, keep the front of the work clear and preserve the viewing distance. Choosing the palette from the room's existing tones stops the composition from looking like an afterthought.
