An LED bulb is the quickest saving you can make without changing a fixture. It gives the same light as an incandescent for about a tenth of the energy, and because it does not run hot it is safe to use near a fabric shade. With LEDs, wattage no longer tells you the light directly. The measure is the lumen: a 9W LED bulb gives around 880 lumens, the equivalent of an old 75W incandescent. Read the lumens, not the watts.
