Choosing an LED Bulb: Cap Type, Output and Light Colour

Three things are settled in order when choosing an LED bulb: the cap type, how much light it gives and the colour of that light. A bulb with the wrong cap will not fit the fitting at all; with the right cap but the wrong colour, the room looks colder than expected. Our collection holds 64 products.

1. Identify the Cap

• E27: the classic large screw cap. The most common type in chandeliers, table lamps and ceiling fittings.
• E14: the small screw cap. Used on the arms of smaller chandeliers and in night lights.
• GU10: the twist-lock spotlight cap. Standard in recessed and track spotlights.
• G9: the two-pin capsule cap. Used in compact decorative fittings.

Taking out the old bulb and photographing the cap is the quickest way to identify the type.

2. Look at the Light, Not the Watts

With LED, watts show consumption, not brightness. As a rough comparison, an old 60 W incandescent bulb corresponds to about a 7–9 W LED today. The densest range in our catalogue is between 4 W and 9 W; there are also 3 W decorative models.

3. Choose the Light Colour by Room

• Warm white: living room, bedroom, restaurant. Restful and welcoming.
• Neutral white: kitchen, bathroom, desk. Renders colours more accurately.
• Cool white: store room, garage, technical areas. Harsh in living spaces.

It matters that every bulb in the same room shares one colour temperature; two different tones side by side are immediately noticeable.

If You Are Going to Dim

Not every LED bulb is dimmable. On a dimmed circuit, a non-dimmable bulb flickers, hums or cuts out at low levels. Make sure this property is stated in the product description.
