How do you read an IP code?

Each of the two digits after IP means something different. The first covers protection against solid objects and dust, the second protection against water. The higher the digit, the greater the protection.

A common misunderstanding is that there is a single "waterproof" level. Water protection is graded: protection against dripping is not the same as protection against spraying or temporary immersion. A fixture described as "moisture resistant" is not one that can be sprayed directly.

Either digit may be replaced by an "X", which means that property has not been stated — not that there is no protection.

Why does position decide the rating in a bathroom?

A bathroom is not one single environment. Directly above a shower tray or bath is an area that takes water; the space around a basin is exposed to splashing; the dry area near the door carries far less risk. Different points in the same bathroom therefore call for different levels of protection.

The practical test is simple: can water reach the fixture directly, only as splashes, or only as steam? The higher the answer, the higher the protection required. Where there is doubt, choosing a higher-rated fixture is both cheaper and safer than replacing one later.

Steam should not be underestimated either. A ceiling fixture that never takes direct water but sits in constant condensation gradually collects moisture inside; in a poorly ventilated bathroom this shortens its life noticeably.

What is different in a kitchen?

In a kitchen the demanding factors are not water but grease vapour and heat. Above the hob, grease particles settle on the fixture surface; the diffuser gradually dulls and the light output visibly drops. Fixtures with a cleanable surface have the advantage here.

There is a second issue over a worktop: shadow. Light coming from the ceiling casts the shadow of whoever stands at the counter directly onto the working surface. Worktops are therefore lit separately; relying on the ceiling fixture alone means the chopping board sits in shadow.

What matters outdoors?

Outdoors, two more factors join water protection: temperature swing and ultraviolet light. A fixture that warms during the day and cools at night can form condensation inside; the quality of the seal is decisive here.

Ultraviolet light gradually changes the colour and clarity of plastic parts. In positions exposed to direct sun, using material made for outdoor use is not the same as moving an indoor fixture outside.

  • Establish whether the position takes water directly.
  • Account for steam density and ventilation.
  • Prefer a cleanable surface above the hob.
  • Light the worktop separately (shadow).
  • Ask about seals and UV resistance outdoors.

What matters besides the IP value in a wet room?

The protection class is a necessary condition but not a sufficient one. In a wet room the body material matters too: a metal frame that corrodes in damp air will show staining and rust within a few years even with a suitable IP value.

The second point is ventilation. Steam collected after a shower hangs for hours in a poorly ventilated bathroom and changes how the fixture cools. The same fixture lasts markedly longer in a bathroom with a working extractor.

The third is protection on the electrical side. In wet rooms the protection of the supply circuit matters as much as the fixture itself; that is a separate question for the electrician rather than part of choosing a light.

What happens when the IP rating is wrong?

An under-rated fixture in a wet room produces two kinds of problem. The first and more important is safety: when water and electricity meet inside one body, the risk is not theoretical.

The second is service life. Moisture corrodes the driver board, and the fixture usually fails gradually rather than suddenly: first flicker, then a colour shift, then complete failure. That gradual decline is often read as "the LED failed"; the real cause is where it was placed.

The distinction matters in practice: buying the same model again does not solve the problem, because the fault lies in the placement rather than the product. A correct diagnosis starts by reassessing what that position is actually exposed to.
