Choosing Angle Trims and Beads: Getting Corners and Edges Right
In plaster and plasterboard work, quality shows in the corners more than in the flat surface. An external corner that takes knocks will be crushed within the first year if it is unprotected; an edge that is not finished cleanly stays visible even after painting. This section holds 8 products and every one of them has a published price.
Types of Angle Trim
- Galvanised angle bead: the classic, economical choice. It protects the external corner against impact and is covered with plaster.
- PVC mesh angle bead: the mesh gives it a better grip in the plaster and it does not rust. Preferred in damp rooms. Our catalogue holds 7x7 cm and 10x10 cm wing sizes.
- Arch (slotted) bead: its wing is cut at intervals; it is bent to shape and applied on curves and circular forms.
- Render bead: in machine-applied plaster it sets both the corner line and the plaster thickness.
Beads and Stop Profiles
A stop bead closes off where the board ends with a clean line: where wall meets ceiling, where two different materials meet, or at a free edge of plasterboard. Without a stop profile these edges crack over time and shed paint.
Application Notes
An angle bead must run unbroken along the whole corner; a line added in pieces cracks at the joints. Check the bead is true before you plaster — a bead fixed out of line will not come straight however much plaster is put over it. Choose the wing size according to the plaster thickness that will cover it.
Budget
All 8 products are priced: from 0.60 EUR to 6.28 EUR, with a median of 0.90 EUR. Allow for cutting waste when working out lengths.
How to Take Off Quantities
The quantity of angle bead comes from the total height of the external corners to be protected: each external corner needs a profile as long as the ceiling height. The quantity of stop bead is the length of the free edges of the board. Add an allowance for cutting waste to both figures; on curved work in particular the waste is markedly higher than on straight runs, because the profile is cut to the radius of the curve and the offcuts may not be usable anywhere else.
