Description
A flat plaster surface comes from a reference, not from the plasterer's eye. Screed beads are that reference: they are fixed plumb to the wall at regular centres, the plaster is filled to their top edge and then ruled off with a straightedge.
Spacing follows the length of your straightedge — if the gap is wider than the rule, a belly is left between beads. Once the plaster has set, the beads are removed and their channels filled with the same mix.

What spacing should the plaster guide strips have?
It must be shorter than the straightedge you use. If you work with a 2 m straightedge, the strips are kept about 1.5–1.8 m apart.

It is better not to leave them. Once the plaster has set they are removed and the grooves filled with the same mortar; a strip left in place can show as a line on the surface over time.
