Description
A flat plaster surface comes from a reference, not from the plasterer's eye. Screed beads are that reference: they are fixed plumb to the wall at regular centres, the plaster is filled to their top edge and then ruled off with a straightedge.
Spacing follows the length of your straightedge — if the gap is wider than the rule, a belly is left between beads. Once the plaster has set, the beads are removed and their channels filled with the same mix.

What spacing should screed beads have?
Less than the length of your straightedge. With a 2 m rule, 1.5–1.8 m between beads works well.
Can the beads be left buried?
Better not. Remove them once the plaster has set and fill the channel with the same mix; a bead left in place can telegraph through later.
