Description

An LED lamp is the quickest saving available without changing your fixture. It gives the same light as an incandescent lamp for about one tenth of the energy, and because it does not run hot it can be used safely near fabric shades.

What a UFO lamp is

A UFO lamp has a flat, wide body instead of the classic pear shape. That form spreads light over a wider angle and dissipates heat better at higher wattages (24W, 32W). In ceiling fixtures and pendants it gives a more even light than a conventional lamp.

Lumens, not watts

With LED, watts no longer tell you the light output directly. The measure is lumens: a 9W LED lamp gives around 880 lumens, equivalent to an old 75W incandescent. Read the lumen figure rather than the wattage.

Usage & Warnings

Fitting and removal

  • Switch off the light and let the lamp cool before fitting or removing it.
  • The cap is E27. Do not force it into a different holder.
  • The UFO body is wider than a conventional lamp and may not fit narrow shades or glass globes — measure the internal width before ordering.

Dimming

  • Standard LED lamps are NOT dimmable. On a dimmer circuit they flicker or fail to light at all.
  • If dimming is required, use a lamp explicitly marked "dimmable".

Use

  • LED lamps run cool, but they should still not touch fabric or paper directly and must be able to ventilate.
  • For indoor use; do not fit in luminaires exposed to direct rain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wattage should I buy?

Read lumens rather than watts. An old 60W incandescent ≈ 700 lumens, 75W ≈ 900 lumens, 100W ≈ 1500 lumens. A 9W LED lamp gives around 880 lumens, so it replaces the old 75W.

Will a UFO lamp fit any fixture?

Electrically it fits any E27 holder, but the UFO body is wider than a conventional lamp and may not enter a narrow shade or glass globe. Measure the internal width of the fixture before ordering.

Is it safe if it touches fabric inside a shade?

An LED lamp runs far cooler than an incandescent one, so use near fabric is generally safe. Even so, the lamp should not be in direct contact with the fabric and must be able to ventilate.

Does it work on a dimmer circuit?

Standard LED lamps are not dimmable; on a dimmer circuit they flicker or do not light at all. If dimming is needed, use a lamp marked "dimmable".

How do I choose the colour temperature?

3000K warm white for living rooms, bedrooms and relaxing spaces; 6500K cool white for kitchens, bathrooms and work areas. Keeping to one colour temperature within a space preserves visual coherence.
