An industrial (highbay) fixture is built for spaces whose ceiling exceeds 5 metres. It directs light downwards through a narrow angle, so that light emitted from height still reaches the floor at a useful intensity. Intensity falls with the square of distance: light emitted from 8 metres arrives at the floor with a quarter of the intensity of light emitted from 4. A wide-beam ceiling fixture at that height scatters its light onto walls and into empty air; the highbay concentrates it and avoids that loss.
