Description

An LED module is a small LED group placed inside signage and channel letters. Modules link together in a chain; each has its own lens body that spreads light over a wide angle, so the acrylic face is lit evenly without hot spots.

How many modules

Box depth decides: the shallower the box, the closer the modules must be. At 8–10 cm depth, spacing them 10–12 cm apart gives a balanced result. Too close to the face and individual bright points show through the acrylic.

Choosing a colour

White and natural white are the standard for general signage. Coloured modules strengthen the colour when used behind coloured acrylic; behind white acrylic they give that colour directly.

Usage & Warnings

Power supply

  • Modules run on 12V and require a 12V LED driver. They must not be plugged into the mains directly.
  • Choose a driver rated at least 20% above the total module wattage.
  • Rather than feeding a long chain from a single driver, split the load across several drivers.

Wiring

  • Cut the chain on the cable between modules; never cut through a module itself.
  • Observe polarity — a reversed connection permanently damages the module.
  • Insulate cut ends with a connector or by soldering.

Where to use

  • For outdoor signage use the resin-filled (silicone-coated) version and seal the sign box against water.
  • Mount the driver outside the box, in a sheltered and ventilated position.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many modules should I buy?

It depends on the internal surface area and the depth of the box. At 8–10 cm depth, spacing of 10–12 cm gives a balanced result and about 70–100 modules per square metre. The shallower the box, the more modules are needed.

How do I size the driver?

Multiply the wattage per module by the number of modules and add 20%. 100 modules at 1.2W = 120 W, so at least a 150 W 12V driver. Rather than running one long chain from a single driver, split the load across several.

Can I cut the chain anywhere?

Cut on the cable between modules; never through a module itself. Cut ends are joined with connectors or by soldering. Mark which end feeds the chain before you cut.

Can they be used in outdoor signage?

Resin-filled (silicone-coated) versions are used in outdoor signage. The box itself must be sealed against water and the driver placed somewhere sheltered.

I can see dots through the acrylic — what should I do?

It means the modules are too close to the face. Either increase the box depth or set the modules closer together and further back. Adding a diffuser layer also softens the dots.
