Neon LED

Description

A 220V neon LED connects directly to the mains without a driver and runs over long distances without voltage drop. It is chosen for façade lighting, outdoor signage and long decorative lines.

The long-run advantage

Where 12V neon weakens beyond five metres, 220V neon carries much further on a single run. That is decisive on a building façade or a long ceiling line where the light must stay continuous.

Safety

It carries mains voltage. Cut only at the marked points and insulate the ends with the manufacturer's connectors. For decorative work at reachable height, choose the 12V version.

Fixing on a facade

IP65 protection stands up to rain; what really decides the outcome, though, is the fixing. If the silicone body is not held by clips it moves in the wind and, over time, works the connection points loose. Set the clips at 25–30 cm intervals, and place one immediately before and after every turn. Joints and cut points are sealed separately.

Working in the cold

LEDs run without trouble at low temperature; their efficiency even improves a little in the cold. The point to watch is not bending a frozen body: in the cold silicone loses its flexibility and can crack. If you are installing in winter, let the body sit somewhere warm first.

Usage & Warnings

Mains voltage

  • This product carries 220–240V mains voltage. It needs no driver and connects directly.
  • Have cutting, joining and any fixed-wiring connection carried out by a qualified electrician.
  • Where hands regularly reach — inside cabinets, low runs in a child's room — choose the 12V version instead.

Cutting and insulation

  • Cut only on the marked points.
  • Cut ends MUST be insulated with the manufacturer's connector; leaving an end exposed creates a risk of electric shock.
  • Outdoors, all connection points must be sealed against water ingress.

Use

  • Never cut, drill or fix the strip while it is energised.
  • Do not bend the tube while frozen; in cold weather it loses flexibility and may crack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a single run be?

220V neon goes much further than the 12V version; according to manufacturer specifications a single run of up to fifty metres is typical. On a 12V run the end noticeably dims beyond five metres.

What is needed to use it on a façade?

IP65 protection resists rain. Connection and cut points must be sealed against water ingress, and the tube fixed with clips so it does not move in the wind. Working at height requires safety precautions.

Can I connect it without an electrician?

Ready-made lengths supplied with a plugged lead can simply be plugged in. Cutting, joining and connecting to fixed wiring, however, mean working with mains voltage; have those done by a qualified electrician.

Is the brightness different from the 12V version?

At the same LED density it is comparable. The difference lies in how it is supplied and how it behaves over distance. The appearance — a continuous line of light — is the same in both.

Does it work in freezing weather?

LEDs run without trouble at low temperatures; efficiency actually improves in the cold. What matters is not bending the silicone tube while frozen — in cold weather it loses flexibility and can crack if forced.
