Description
Neon LED is an LED strip enclosed in a silicone tube. Because the tube spreads the light, the individual LEDs do not show — what comes out is a continuous line of light. It gives the look of classic glass neon without its fragility or high voltage.
Where it is used
Because it bends, it is used for lettering and logos, in curved coves, along furniture edges and for decorative lines. The 12V version runs on extra-low voltage and is preferred indoors and on reachable surfaces.
Bending limits
The tube bends only in the direction of its flat face; forcing it sideways breaks the circuit inside. Keep that in mind when planning lettering — right-angle turns need the tube cut and rejoined with a connector.

Usage & Warnings
Power supply
- This product runs on 12V and must not be plugged into the mains directly. A 12V LED driver is required between the strip and the mains.
- Choose a driver rated at least 20% above the total wattage of the strip. A driver running at its limit overheats and fails early.
- Place the driver where it can ventilate; do not bury it in a sealed box or in insulation.
Cutting and joining
- Cut only on the marked scissor points. Cutting anywhere else breaks the circuit of that section.
- Join cut ends with the manufacturer's connectors or by soldering; never leave bare ends exposed.
- Observe polarity — reversed connections stop the strip from lighting.
Where to use
- Standard versions are for indoor use. Use a version with the appropriate ingress protection rating in bathrooms, on façades and under eaves.
- Clean the surface of dust and grease before sticking the strip down; the adhesive backing will not hold on a dirty surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does neon LED differ from LED strip?
On an LED strip the individual LEDs are visible; in a neon tube the silicone spreads the light into a continuous line. It is a difference of appearance — an LED strip is generally brighter. Neon suits lettering and decorative lines, strip suits general lighting.
Which way does it bend?
Only in the direction of the flat face. Forcing it sideways breaks the circuit board inside and that section goes dark. Right-angle turns need the tube cut and rejoined with a connector.
What do I need to make lettering?
Neon tube, cutting and joining connectors, a backing panel (acrylic or timber), fixing clips and a 12V driver of the right size. Drawing the letters on the panel and following them with clips is the usual method.
Should I choose 12V or 220V?
Indoors, where hands can reach, and on short runs: 12V. For long façade runs and where you would rather not site a driver: 220V. 12V is safer, 220V goes further.
Can it be used outdoors?
IP65 protection resists rain and it can be used under eaves and in sheltered outdoor areas. If the driver itself is not rated for outdoor use it must be placed inside, somewhere sheltered.
