Description
An LED driver converts 220V mains into the 12V direct current that strips and modules run on. Choosing one comes down to a single calculation, and skipping it means the driver overheats and its life is shortened.
Sizing the driver
Multiply the wattage per metre of your strip by the total length and choose a driver rated at least 20% above the result:
- 5 m × 14.4 W/m = 72 W → at least 90 W (≈7.5A)
- 10 m × 14.4 W/m = 144 W → at least 175 W (≈15A)
Amperage follows from wattage: in a 12V system 10A equals 120 W.
Where to put it
A driver warms up in use and needs to ventilate. Do not bury it inside a sealed box, between insulation or within plasterboard. Place it where it can be reached for maintenance — in a lighting run the driver is the part replaced most often.

Selection
- Choose a driver rated at least 20% above the load it will feed. In a 12V system 10A corresponds to 120 W.
- An oversized driver does no harm; an undersized one overheats and fails early.
Placement
- The driver warms up in use and needs ventilation. Do not bury it in a sealed box, in insulation or inside plasterboard.
- Place it where it can be reached when maintenance is needed.
- The input side connects to 220–240V mains; have this connection made by a qualified electrician.
Use
- A noticeable hum usually means the driver is running at the edge of its capacity; reduce the load or move to a larger driver.
- Do not use in wet or damp locations; this is an indoor part requiring ventilation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What amperage do I need?
Divide the total wattage of the strip by 12 and add 20% to the result. Example: 72 W ÷ 12V = 6A, so you need 7.5A — buy the 10A driver. A driver working at its limit overheats and fails early.
Is an oversized driver a problem?
No. A driver supplies as much current as the connected load draws; running below capacity is not a problem and in fact extends its life. An undersized driver is the real risk.
Can I bury the driver in plasterboard?
Not advisable. The driver warms up and needs ventilation; in a sealed space the temperature rises and its life shortens. It is also the part most often replaced in a lighting run — putting it somewhere unreachable makes future maintenance difficult.
How many metres of strip can one driver feed?
As much as its wattage allows. However, a long single run in a 12V system causes voltage drop; beyond five metres it is better to feed from the middle or split into several branches.
The driver hums — is that normal?
A faint hum is normal on some models. A pronounced buzz usually means the driver is working at the edge of its capacity; reduce the load or move up to a larger driver.
