Description
A frameless LED panel differs from a conventional recessed fixture in how it looks: there is no metal frame. Once recessed, only the light-emitting surface is visible; the housing stays entirely within the ceiling.
The result is a disc or square of light floating in the ceiling. It is chosen for minimal interiors and for projects where the ceiling surface is to be kept plain.
A difference in installation
Frameless models are held by springs inside the ceiling, with the diffuser edge finishing flush with the ceiling face. This makes the cut-out diameter more critical: with no frame, nothing covers an overcut edge.
How it looks switched off
Off, it reads as a flat surface in the colour of the ceiling. On a white ceiling it is barely noticeable — that is the main reason frameless models are chosen. A framed fixture, by contrast, remains visible as a metal ring even when it is off.
Clearance needed above the ceiling
Allow 5 to 8 cm for the body depth and the driver. Putting the driver somewhere reachable, rather than immediately beside the fixture, makes later maintenance easier: in a lighting installation the part that gets replaced is usually the driver, not the LEDs.

Usage & Warnings
Before installation
- Switch off the circuit at the fuse box before wiring.
- Check the cut-out diameter against the figure given for your chosen wattage. If the hole is cut too large the fixture will not hold.
- Allow at least 5–8 cm of clearance above the ceiling for the fixture and its driver.
- This product is for recessed installation and cannot be mounted directly onto concrete.
Driver placement
- Place the driver where it can ventilate and be reached later; never bury it in insulation material.
- The driver is the part most often replaced in a lighting run — plan access for it.
Use
- Wipe with a dry cloth; do not use abrasive cleaners.
- For indoor use. Areas exposed to direct water, such as above a shower or bath, require a fixture with the appropriate ingress protection rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the advantage of a frameless panel?
Appearance: no metal ring or square frame shows on the ceiling, only the light surface. On a ceiling meant to stay plain, the fixture does not draw the eye. In lighting terms there is no difference from a framed model.
What if I get the cut-out wrong?
It matters more here: with no frame, nothing covers an overcut edge. If the hole is too large a gap shows and you will need to make good with filler. Check the dimension twice before cutting.
Can it go into a ceiling other than plasterboard?
The spring-clip system needs a thin, resilient surface; plasterboard and similar suspended ceiling panels are suitable. It cannot be recessed directly into concrete — there a surface-mounted fixture is used.
How much clearance is needed above the ceiling?
Typically 5–8 cm for the housing depth and the driver. Placing the driver somewhere accessible rather than immediately beside the fixture makes later maintenance easier.
How does it look when switched off?
As a plain surface in the colour of the ceiling. On a white ceiling it is barely noticeable, which is the main reason frameless models are chosen.
