Magnetic track lighting is a low-voltage system in which the fixtures sit on the track by magnet. What sets it apart from a classic track spot is that a fixture can be lifted off by hand and repositioned anywhere along the track: when the furniture layout changes, the lighting changes with it — no electrical work required. The system has three parts and all three must match: the track, the fixtures that clip into it, and the driver that feeds the track. Magnetic tracks do not run on mains voltage but on low DC voltage (commonly 48V); they therefore need their own driver, and the driver's output must be rated above the combined load of every fixture on the track. The track type determines the installation. Surface-mounted track is fixed directly to the ceiling and is the fastest solution on an existing ceiling. Recessed and trimless tracks are set into a plasterboard ceiling; because they finish flush with the surface they give a cleaner look, but they must be planned together with the plasterboard work. When choosing fixtures, beam angle is decisive: narrow-beam spots highlight a picture or a worktop, while wide-beam units provide general lighting. Combining different beam angles on the same track is the most practical way to build both ambient and accent lighting on a single line.

The Magnetic Track System: How It Is Built and How to Choose

A magnetic track takes lighting out of a fixed layout and makes it changeable after the fact. The fittings sit on the track by magnet; you can slide them, take them off, or put a different type in their place. Our collection holds 78 products.

The System Has Three Parts

  • The track: can be installed recessed, surface-mounted or suspended. Lengths are joined together to suit the space.
  • The power supply: must cover the combined power of the fittings on the track. Leave a 20% margin in the calculation.
  • The fittings: spotlights, linear modules, pendants and fill-light types can be mixed on the same track.

Working Out the Power

The most common fitting power in our catalogue is 12 W; 7 W, 10 W, 15 W, 18 W, 30 W and 36 W options are also available. If, for example, you use six 12 W spotlights and two 18 W linear modules, the total load is 108 W and you should choose a power supply of at least the 130 W class. You can identify the right class under LED modules, drivers and transformers.

Where Does It Work Well?

  • Open-plan living room and kitchen: focused light over the island, fill light over the seating — two different functions on a single line.
  • Shops and displays: when the product layout changes, sliding the fitting is enough; no further work on the ceiling is needed.
  • Corridors: a slim track visually lengthens the ceiling.

Installation Notes

A recessed track sits in a channel prepared in a plasterboard ceiling, so the installation has to be planned together with the ceiling build. A surface track is fixed straight to a concrete ceiling. In a suspended installation the hanger cables must be set to equal lengths along the run of the track; otherwise the line of light looks crooked.

If the light is to be dimmed, both the power supply and the fitting must support it; compare the labels before choosing LED remotes and controllers.
