Floor Lamp Solutions

The fastest way to light a corner without touching the ceiling

A floor lamp brings light to places where there is no ceiling outlet and no new circuit can be run. Its greatest advantage is that it moves: when the furniture layout changes, the lamp moves with it, while a ceiling fitting stays where it was installed. Living room corners, the side of a reading chair and the wall opposite a television are the most common positions.

Where should a floor lamp go?

The position follows what the light is for. For ambient light, place it in a corner close to the wall and choose an upward-facing model: the light hits the ceiling, spreads and softens shadows.

For reading, place it behind the chair and slightly to one side so the light falls over your shoulder onto the page. Placing it directly opposite you sends the light into your eyes instead.

In rooms with a television, the lamp should sit at an angle that does not increase screen reflection. A dimmable model makes a clear difference here: a low setting while the screen is on, a higher one for general use.

Floor lamp or ceiling fitting?

A ceiling fitting lights the whole room evenly and is fixed; its position is decided once. A floor lamp works locally and can be moved. They are not alternatives but complements: the ceiling fitting sets the base level, the floor lamp brings the used corner forward.

If you rent, or you would rather not touch the ceiling, a floor lamp is the only workable answer. It also travels with you — a ceiling fitting usually stays behind.

Safety and placement

The cable should not cross a walkway; running it under a rug wears the insulation and hides the damage. Planning the socket position around where the lamp will stand removes the need for an extension lead.

In homes with children or pets, choose a weighted base. Whether a bulb is included, and which socket type is required, is stated on every product page.

Who is it for?

Renters

Lighting without touching the ceiling; it moves out with you.

Reading corners

A downward model behind the chair puts focused light on the page.

Living room refresh

The dark corner is closed with a single product, no wiring.

Frequently asked questions

Can a floor lamp replace a ceiling light?+

Not entirely. A ceiling fitting lights the room evenly; a floor lamp works locally. An upward-facing floor lamp comes close to ambient light by bouncing it off the ceiling, but the two are complements rather than alternatives.

Which model suits reading?+

A downward-facing model, preferably with an adjustable head. Place it behind the chair and slightly to one side so the light falls over your shoulder; placing it opposite you sends light into your eyes.

Is there a tipping risk?+

Weighted-base models stay stable in walkways. In homes with children or pets we recommend checking the base weight specifically.

Is a bulb included?+

It depends on the product and is stated on every product page. Where it is not included, the required socket type (E27, E14) is given.

Do I need a wall dimmer for a dimmable model?+

Not if the dimming is built into the lamp. If you intend to use a wall dimmer, check the compatibility note on the product page.

Can I use an extension lead?+

It is possible, but the cable must not cross a walkway. Running cable under a rug causes wear and hides the damage; a position near the socket is preferable.
