Why direction matters more than size
The most common mistake with a desk lamp is aiming it straight at yourself: the light reaches your eyes and dazzles instead of lighting the surface. The correct placement lets the light fall onto the work from the side and above.
For right-handed users the lamp belongs on the left, for left-handed users on the right — so your own hand does not shadow the work. Models with an adjustable arm let you revise that decision later and make a single lamp usable for different tasks.
Colour temperature follows the task
Warm white light creates a restful setting at the end of the day and is the usual choice for a bedside lamp; it suits reading but becomes tiring for work that needs long concentration.
Neutral and cool white show detail more clearly and suit studying, technical drawing, handcraft and long hours in front of a screen. Models with selectable colour temperature combine both uses in one lamp — neutral by day, warm in the evening.

Rechargeable or corded?
Corded models are right for a lamp that will always be used in the same place: the light output is constant, there is no charge to keep track of, and power is usually higher.
Rechargeable models free the lamp from a piece of furniture. A reading corner far from a socket, a balcony table, an evening when the power is out — in those cases portability is the function itself. As with any battery product, run time depends on the level in use and the battery ages over time.

Is a bulb included?+
It depends on the product and is stated clearly on every product page. Where it is not included, the required socket type (E27, E14, GU10) is given.
Does a dimmable model need a separate dimmer?+
No. The dimming is built into the lamp and needs no external dimmer switch. If you intend to use a wall dimmer, check the compatibility note on the product page.
